Social Networks for SMEs - How to get started

Recently, while teaching a course, we were asked for some advice on how to start using Social Media in a small business to get customers. We thought we should share this advice with you.

Create a Knowledge Base

It is important that you have an entry point for your customers and the Facebook user base is a social platform that should not be ignored. If you are just starting out, I would like to use this as your knowledge base, where any other Social Media will point - social media.

Generate noise , make people talk about your company or your services

There is no better and more effective tool than Twitter to generate that noise, that current of conversation, but you have to use it wisely.

This is what we advise:
  • Start with the basic Twitter web interface to build trust and followers .
  • Identify a hashtag related to your services or company that you can use in all your tweets.
  • Once you're comfortable with the concept of Twitter, it's time to look at and use third-party tools to help you organize information, schedule tweets, search for key topics, and engage in conversations. I would recommend Hootsuite as your user interface and something like a Tweepi to help build a fan base.

Once you are using third-party tools, you can use TweetDeck to embed key messages across all social platforms (there are many tools from many others that claim they can embed your posts across all social platforms, but more than helping generate more Confusion. Our advice is to keep things simple at first.)

Some general tips for Social Media

  • Use the same avatar on all social platforms.
  • Doing your Tweets on a regular basis is better than a lot of Tweets in a short amount of time.
  • If it were a personal account we would not give you this approach, but since what we see is a company account then we encourage you to use the general rule, which is that if you follow someone on Twitter, they will also follow you, like this That starts your fan base by following others who talk about the same topic.
  • Join the conversation with other people - don't just send messages / tweets with your own content.
  • Getting followers will take time - be patient.
  • If people Retweet your message it is good that you thank them (there are those who tend to wait until the end of the week to do so and thank 5/6 people at once). They will likely retweet you again in the future if you do.

Other social platforms to consider

Once you are familiar with the above, there are other social platforms that you should consider:

  • YouTube - If you have any videos, create a YouTube account and upload it there. You can also use your Facebook accounts and Twitter platforms to raise awareness.
  • SlideShare - This is also a very powerful medium for exchanging messages. If you have any Powerpoint that you would like to share, without a doubt Slidesha is the medium to use. Slideshare also has its own social network, as well as integration with Facebook (that is, people who may like your presentations on Slideshare).
  • LinkedIn - Today is much more than a job resource tool. With 100,000,000 professionals, it is now a valuable community for sharing knowledge and resources. Participate in communities that are related to your sector, start participating in conversations and build trust. Once all this is done you can start with your "advertising" in these communities. It will be very useful to try to build a good relationship with the Community Manager, as he is in charge of the community, and who will kick you out if you only "advertise" your own products.

There are literally hundreds of different social platforms and tools. Do not panic!
Start small, build your community of followers little by little, and most importantly, engage in conversations with people.
After all, it is with the people you will have a business relationship with, not the tools.
